Required Courses

The American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Preparation Program (ITP) will prepare students to interpret between people who are hard of hearing or deaf and hearing individuals at entry-level ASL interpreting positions and internships to facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing persons and hearing persons and/or transfer to a 4-year degree.

Extensive course work in both ASL and the ASL Interpreting Profession is required in terms of knowledge, theory, and practice in this program aiming at exposing students to the ASL language, deaf culture, and interpreting as a profession. Students will have hands-on opportunities through the language lab to practice their skills and through activities outside of class with the community. The program will culminate with a practicum where the students will have hands-up experience in the community.

Learning a language takes time, so in order for students to meet the demands of this program, students must enter the program at the intermediate ASL level. This means students must have taken and earned credit with at least a grade of “C” or better in the beginning language sequence (ASL 111  and ASL 112 ), or ASL 212 , or the equivalent, upon entry to the program. Students will have learned and be able to uphold professional interpretation standards. Optionally, students can begin the General Education courses in the program of study prior to beginning the ITP program, if they desire.

In order to complete the program, students must earn a “C” or better in all ASL and Interpreter courses before moving to the next level of courses. Students must also complete practicum in the last semester of the program.
