ECE 104 - Emergent Literacy This course explores the foundations of emergent literacy from infancy through primary grades, placing special attention on the links between emergent reading and early writing and the importance of speaking and listening to children’s literacy development. It emphasizes developing knowledge and using appropriate resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful and challenging literacy curriculum for young children. Students will examine characteristics of a rich literacy environment, how to foster print and phonological awareness, and ways to facilitate literacy through play in the context of the ODE Learning Language Arts Content Standards. The course includes appropriate selection of books for children, model reading techniques, web and media literacy-related materials and resources. Experience in a literacy tutoring program is required outside of class each week.
