Accounting Technology Information


The Accounting Program, through a fully comprehensive curriculum, offers students a variety of choices through an Associate’s degree and accounting certificates to immediately enter the job market.  Upon completion, students have acquired fundamental accounting skills, including preparation and interpretation of financial statements, budget development, cost analysis, computer applications and tax compliance.  These skills prepare them for employment in a variety of positions including, but not limited to:  bookkeepers, payroll clerks , auditing clerks, accounts receivable / payable clerks, tax preparers, and accountants.

Students working towards the Accounting Technology degree will also earn three related certificates, which are fully embedded in the degree: QuickBooks Certificate , Payroll Certificate , and Bookkeeping Certificate .

Student Learning Outcomes

Student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of theory and methods of double-entry accounting system.

  • Communicate accounting and financial information orally, in writing and with computer technologies. 

  • Interpret financial information to make decisions, recognize and resolve problems and inaccuracies.

  • Work collaboratively, ethically and demonstrate professional responsibility.

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of accounting standards and taxation.

Employment Opportunities

Students who graduate with an Associate’s degree in Accounting are highly employable.  The job outlook through 2020 indicates an increase in total employment in Northwest Ohio of 6.9% to 14.2%.  Students can find employment in the following areas:

Transfer Information

Students who wish to transfer to a four-year program in Accounting should consider the Business Transfer Pathway, AS (Owens Code: BUTP) .  The  associate of science degree program provides the basic curriculum needed for the first two years of a bachelor’s degree in business.  This program is transfer-oriented and is ideal for aspiring business students who intend on transferring from Owens Community College to a college or university setting.
