CIV 185 - Statics & Strength of Material The study of Statics and Strength of Materials is the study of Mechanics as it relates to the design of building components. It is broken into two areas of study. The student will study force vector analysis in bodies at rest in Statics. Determine magnitudes, directions and resultants. Strength of Materials explores a component’s ability to resist internal and external forces and stresses trying to pull the component apart. The student will solve free-body diagrams, shear and bending moment diagrams, selection of member sizes, deflections and connection types and capacities.
