What is a Dietetic Technician?
A Dietetic Technician is a food and nutrition practitioner who has completed at least a two-year associate’s degree at a US regionally accredited university or college. Dietetic Technicians work under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian in a variety of employment settings including nursing care facilities, hospitals, physician offices, clinics or other health-care facilities. In addition, a large number of Dietetic Technicians work in community and public health settings such as school or day care centers, correctional facilities, weight management clinics and WIC programs as nutrition counselors.
Is there a credential for a Dietetic Technician?
Yes. The Dietetic Technology Program at Owens Community College is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. When an individual has successfully completed the Dietetic Technology Program, with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Dietetic Technology from Owens Community College (including the completion of a minimum of 450 supervised practice hours) and successfully completed the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians; the initials “DTR”, Dietetic Technician, Registered, are awarded.
DTR’s are required to complete 50 hours of approved continuing professional education every five years with the development of a Professional Development Portfolio through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
How long is the Dietetic Technician Program?
The DTP is five semesters that includes academic courses and supervised practice experience.
I already have some college credit; can I complete the program in less than 5 semesters?
Due to the sequencing of courses, it takes five semesters to complete the Dietetic Technology courses and associated supervised practice experiences.
Do the Dietetic Technology courses at Owens transfer to a four-year institution?
Each institution varies in specific course transfer. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics publishes a list of accredited dietetics programs by State, which offers potential four year institutions. The articulation agreement to Bowling Green State University provides graduates with a guide to transferring into the dietetic program to earn their Bachelor Degree. Ohio Transfer Module (OTM) options guide students in transferring to other Ohio four-year higher education institutions. Advising staff are available to assist you with this process.
Employment and Wage Earnings
The knowledge acquired along with 450 hours of supervised practice (clinical) and passage of the CDR credentialing exam prepares graduates to work as a NDTR independently or in teams with Registered Dietitians in a variety of healthcare and foodservice facilities including hospitals, skilled and long-term care facilities, schools, community health programs, health clubs, food companies and senior nutrition programs.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation (ANDF) offers scholarships to encourage eligible students to enter the field of dietetics. Student members of the Academy enrolled in the first year of study in an ACEND-accredited dietetic technician program may apply for a Foundation scholarship for use in the second year of study.
